100th Day of School
On the hundredth day of school, first grade looked back at what it was like 100 years ago. They used their iPads to Google things they knew were around 100 years ago. Many things have changed drastically in a 100 years, such as cars, planes, cameras, radios and fire trucks. They also learned about things they use every day that were invented after 1912, such as the microwaves, camcorders, computers, Barbie and McDonalds. They learned that over time, things change. The good things stick around and are improved upon while others disappear into the history books to make room for new inventions. |

Region 17 Robotics Competition
On Saturday, January 14, four Guthrie High School teams competed in the Region 17 TCEA Robotics contest at Slaton High School. Teams from Lubbock, Slaton, Lorenzo, Sundown, Dawson, Tahoka, Lamesa, Paducah and Guthrie HS competed in the Arena Challenge and Invention contests.
Colton and Abby competed as our Advanced Arena Challenge team. This year's arena challenge focused on cleaning up a failing nuclear power plant. They had to build a robot that would go into a nuclear facility and clean up spent nuclear materials and deal with relocating active materials that are in danger of meltdown. They were presented with three rounds of random scenarios that they had to deal with. They had written six different programs that would accommodate any six possibilities of random placements of active and spent nuclear materials. Of their three rounds, two of them were close to being perfect, but they came up short on one. They placed second overall in advanced competition and earned a spot to the state competition.

Kevin and Quincy invented an automated system for public restrooms called AutoOcupado. It uses lights at the entrance to indicate which stalls are vacant or in use. The system also flushes toilets automatically. They also built an automatic toilet paper dispenser. It was a very clever way to make public restrooms germs-free and earier to use. Kevin and Quincy earned 2nd Place overall in the Advanced Inventions category and earned a spot to the state competition.

We had two other teams than placed well in the Advanced Inventions
contest. Samantha, Diana, MacKenzie and Laura invented a robotic video camera system, similar to what they use to video NFL games. The camera travels back and forth on a cable and is operated with a remote control. There is also a remote control for the camera system, that rotates 360 degrees.
JJ and Fernando built an amazing automated cattle chute that brands and injects cattle. The invention is incredibly elaborate. They used 2 ultrasonic sensors, two light sensors, five motors and some pretty creative programming. Mrs. Canales worked with them for three weeks, prepping them for their presentation. They were confident and very well spoken.
These two teams are candidates for wild card spots to the state contest. We'll know about those two teams by the end of January if they have qualified for a spot at the state contest. The state robotics contest will be on April 14 in Irving TX.
